Odds & Ends March/April 2018

Picking Up the Pieces
Everything old can be made new again. Or at least it can be made different. Such is the premise of Unshattered – a nonprofit social enterprise where women who are winning their battle against addiction make handbags and other products out of repurposed items and other materials.

Having completed the recovery program at the Walter Hoving Home - a Garrison residential rehabilitation center for women overcoming alcoholism, drug and other addictions - the women of Unshattered use high-quality, donated materials to make beautifully useful products, and express themselves creatively.

The organization’s mission is to help the women find a path forward to economic independence and sustained sobriety, which is done by helping them gain skills as bag designers, seamstresses, salespeople, production and office managers, and design specialists to prepare for their futures. Proceeds form the sales of the products funnel back into Hoving Home programs.

Unshattered’s founder and CEO, Kelly Lyndgaard, will soon be a “Movers & Shakers” subject, but to learn more about Unshattered in the meantime, log onto www.unshattered.org or follow them on Instagram (@unshatteredNY).

Mission: Mansion Living
Ever wanted to settle down in a mansion but didn’t want to pay for one? This job might be for you.

A Newburgh site on Balmville Rd. in the middle of a dramatic renovation is in need of a hospitality director who will manage the home for guests and special events, live in the guest house and get a discount on the rent. While it is still two to three months from completion, the house will be used for weddings, special gatherings, family reunions, and AirBnB guests.

An open house will take place sometime in May or June for the general public, but if you are local, love hospitality, have experience in hotels or bed and breakfasts and are in need of a mansion to call home, drop them an email.

Island Adventure!
The former home to Bannerman’s munition company when it moved from Brooklyn in the early 1900, the stretch of land just north of West Point is actually named Pollepel Island.
Soon after the Bannermans purchased it as a safe storage site construction began on a simulated Scottish castle and simple residence in 1901.
The island was later donated to the people of the State of New York.

The Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc., along with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation provide public walking and self-guided tours of the Bannerman Castle and Pollepel Island via passenger boat, or kayak.

Tours depart from Beacon (kayak or passenger boat), Cold Spring (kayak), Cornwall-on-Hudson (kayak), and Newburgh (passenger boat) and reservations are required. As there is rough terrain on the walking tours – and a 72-step climb from the dock to the start of the tour – comfortable shoes are recommended. Tours depart rain or shine.
